ECE Undergraduate Linux Laboratory Policies
Page
How do you get an account?
Accounts are given to students the first time that a class requires access
to the laboratory. Usually this is ECE 272 laboratory.
How long will I have an account?
Our intention is that students will have accounts until they graduate and
no longer. However, it may become the case at a later date that we cut
off accounts earlier. Therefore, you should backup the data that you feel
is important incase this were to happen (again, this is not expected).
How do I change my password?
Once you are logged into one of the Undergraduate Linux Laboratory
machines you can change your password by issueing the command yppasswd.
That command will prompt you for your current password and a new password.
This new password will be your network password for ANY of the laboratory
machines.
What if I forget my password?
You should not forget your password anymore than you forget your password
to the myriad of other systems around Clemson. Getting your password reset
for those systems is troublesome and it is the same with us - basically
because it requires human interaction. In the (un)likely event that you forget your password you can contact the following people in this order and
politely ask for your password to be reset:
Will my data be safe?
At this time we do not do backups of user directories. Therefore, if you
are careless and delete your data by accident, do not change your password
or use an easy to crack password and another student deletes your data
then those are all your problems. Excuses for not turning in assignments
due to these events will not be acceptable.
Is my account the same as my CNS account?
No. Our user accounts, user IDs, passwords, and file system is completely
seperate from CNS. Therefore, do not expect to be able to place files into
a directory on their machines and be able to retreive them (without tools)
on our machines. Your password is seperate and you should treat it as such
by choosing a seperate password for this laboratory.
When will my account be disabled?
When you graduate. The intention is that your account will exist from the
first time you need it until you no longer need it. If you want any of your
data you should take it with you when you leave. When we delete accounts
there will not be any backup, all of your data will just disappear.
Can I use the undergraduate linux laboratory for email or to
serve web pages?
