There is a firewall around the undergraduate linux lab (among other computers). Insecure connections are not allowed to the lab. If you are not aware, connections using ftp, telnet, rlogin, rsh, etc are VERY insecure. Secure Shell (ssh) is a system that has been in use for many years and uses fairly hard to break encryption. This is the only type of connection allowed into the lab.
The machines in Riggs 10, the basement, have ssh on them as a client. So, you can use those machines to connect to the linux lab machines simply by typing 'ssh ullab.ece.clemson.edu'. Also note that the domain for the linux laboratory machines is 'ece.clemson.edu' not 'ces.clemson.edu'.
To access ullab.ece.clemson.edu from a Windows machine we suggest you download the free (to students) version of the SSH Client for Windows. This is provided by Clemson University DCIT at http://download.clemson.edu. The university has a license for this and DCIT provides support for it. When accessing this web page you will have to put in your Clemson username and password (the one you use for registering for classes).
